The name “General Botha” refers to the name of the Training Ship “SATS General Botha,”  donated to the South African nation by Captain TBF Davis – a prominent stevedore in South African ports a century ago.

The training ship was donated in memory of his son Howard Davis, who lost his life at the Battle of the Somme. This is the very same Howard Davis, after whom that iconic building above Glenwood, which homes the University of KZN, and which has educated many thousands of South Africans for 100 years and will continue to do so.
